Paddle for the Future Flotilla

The Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Water Protectors Network are co-hosting this years Paddle Out for the Future event on Aug 29, 2026 from 9-12pm at Kiwanis Beach in St ignace, MI. 

Anishinaabeg are river, lake, and woodland people. Anishinaabeg lived on the East Coast as the ice covered the land about 11,000 years ago. Anishinaabeg witnessed the melting of the ice and the formation of the Great Lakes. Wenabozho had a wife, and she was a “mermaid Bwaananaabekwe/Nibiinaabeg” The Birth of the Mermaid Clan (Doodem) In Anishinaabe culture, the clan (doodem) system determines a person’s role and responsibility within the community. Through the union of Wenabozho and Bwaananaabekwe, the Water Spirit / Mermaid Clan was established. Aadizookaanan of Wenabozho and his story of being in the water.
